What is maths at Oakley Primary Academy?

At Oakley Primary Academy, we aim to teach the children how to make sense of mathematics in the world around them. We do this by developing their ability to calculate, reason and problem solve, whilst developing their mathematical thinking.

We use an integrated approach to fluency, reasoning and problem solving. The way in which areas are taught enable the pupils opportunities to re visit, reinforce and build upon their knowledge in a sequential way, instead of changing maths areas before they are confident.

We follow the National Curriculum and use the White Rose approach to support teaching and learning. These areas are broken into small steps to ensure progression of skills and concepts are clear to the pupils and the teachers.

Children are able to reflect on prior learning before new learning; this helps towards assessing their starting points. This flexibility ensures that with the structure teachers can also be adaptable; making the teaching and learning personalised to their class.

Mathematical talk provides questions to encourage mathematical thinking and reasoning to develop depth of knowledge.

New concepts are taught in a systematic way throughout the school; these are taught in a CPA approach.

Concrete: Where pupils have the opportunity to use concrete objects and manipulatives to help them understand what they are doing.

Pictorial: Alongside the concrete, pupils use pictorial representations. These pictorial representations can be used to help reason and solve problems.

Abstract: Both concrete and pictorial representations then support pupil’s understanding of abstract methods.

We reinforce fluency through mental and oral starters to lessons. We in cooperate 10 minutes of daily fluency (timetables and time) into the day to support and consolidate learning. We also use TT Rockstars and My Maths to support learning within school and at home.

Key vocabulary is taught explicitly and can be found on the maths working walls within the classrooms.

Welcome to Oakley Primary Academy

It brings me great pleasure to welcome you to Oakley Primary Academy, a proud member of the Meridian Trust. Having joined the school in September 2023, I am honoured to be here to seek to make Oakley the first-choice school for parents and carers in the heart of the community of our wonderful village and local area.

We hope that, during their time with us, our children will enjoy exciting new experiences, deepen and broaden their knowledge of our curriculum, make new friends and love every day. We are very fortunate to have a highly-experienced, professional and dedicated staff body whom I know are committed to ensuring we do our very best for your children.

If you are a parent / carer who is considering sending your child to join our fantastic school, we encourage you to come and see us 'in action' during the day. We are confident that you will agree this is a place your child can thrive.

I look forward to meeting you.

Mr. Callum Brown
