Promoting Fundamental British Values
In accordance with The Department for Education's Guidance on promoting fundamental British values in schools, we aim to actively promote British values to ensure young people leave school prepared for life in modern Britain.
Pupils are encouraged to regard people of all faiths, races and cultures with respect and tolerance and understand that while different people may hold different views about what is ‘right’ and ‘wrong’, all people living in England are subject to its law.
The British values are:
• democracy
• rule of law
• individual liberty
• mutual respect
• tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs.
Each of these values are regularly taught / highlighted in curriculum lessons at Oakley, as well as being taught explicitly as part of our school assemblies.
For example, our School Council are democratically elected, and in January 2024, we welcomed local MP the Rt. Hon. Richard Fuller to talk to the children about democracy and his role as a Member of Parliament. Mr. Fuller met with the School Council and was thrilled to hear all about their active roles in listening to the student body and seeking to make positive changes at the school.
